Virtual Academy for Mid-Level Managers
A two-part program designed to help you manage more confidently
You don't have to navigate mid-level management alone. This program combines practical learning, campus recreation situations, applied tools, and a peer cohort to help you lead more confidently now—and build the judgement, relationships and range for what comes next.
This nine-week professional development experience is designed to support mid-level campus recreation professionals as they navigate the challenges and opportunities of leading frrom the middle. Combining self-paced learning, live facilitated sessions, practical application and peer connection, participants will strengthen the skills and confidence needed to lead teams, navigate organizaztional dynamics, solve complex problems, and contribute strategically within their departments and institutions.

- Apply leadership and management strategies to effectively lead teams and navigate the responsibilities of a mid-level role.
- Navigate organizational dynamics and change while balancing the needs of staff, leadership, and institutional priorities.

How much time should I expect to dedicate to this program?
There are a variety of components to this course that you will access from the contents tab within this page after you register.
The live 90-minute kickoff session starts on Friday October 23 from 9-10:30am PST.
There will be 8 additional live 90-minute sessions separated into two parts, each occuring on Fridays at 9am PST. Part one is between the dates of October 19 - November 20, 2026. Part two is between the dates of January 4 - January 29, 2027. Participants are expected to attend Friday discussion meetings, 12:00pm–1:30pm / 9:00–10:30 a.m. Pacific.
Between the live sessions, you will have access to the self-paced program materials.
Who should register for this program?
Professionals currently serving in mid-level management roles and balancing responsibility for people, programs, budgets, operations, and relationships above, below, and across their institution.
Current mid-level managers who want to strengthen day-to-day management practice and build the leadership capability broader responsibility will require.
Eligibility: Participants must currently hold a mid-level management role; length of time in the role does not matter.
What if I miss one of the live sessions?
Participants are strongly encouraged to attend all live sessions, however you will receive access to recordings if you are unable to attend.

The Ohio State University
Stephanne Musser currently serves as an Assistant Director of Programs at Ohio State University. She has worked in collegiate recreation for 25 years, starting as a student employee swiping cards at the front desk. She is entering her 14th year at OSU and oversees Fitness Programs and Services and Esports as well. Stephanne is a long time NIRSA member and has been involved at the state, regional and NIRSA level for numerous years. She has served the NIRSA in many capacities including continued work with supporting education and growth for middle managers. She has led presentations, roundtables, webinars and continues to be an advocate for building strong middle managers within our association. Stephanne also leads a middle management co-hort within her department. Stephanne is an avid weightlifter, walker, and reader! She lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband Scott and son Harrison!
Lashica Thomas

Columbus State University
Lashica Thomas served as the NIRSA Board President for the 2025-2026 NIRSA leadership year and is currently the Director of Campus Recreation at Columbus State University in Georgia, part of NIRSA Region II. She first joined NIRSA in 2003 and throughout her career she's been involved with the Association through many different volunteer roles during her two decades of membership with this historic association!
She was recognized in 2019 for her role in building a diverse and inclusive culture in our Association by fostering equality of opportunity, encouraging diverse perspectives, and creating a welcoming and supportive climate when she received the Juliette Moore People of Color Distinguished Leadership Award.
