Leadership in Layers: Training Student Leaders to Develop Others is designed for campus recreation professionals who train and support student leaders in supervisory roles. Through rotating breakout sessions on giving feedback, hiring, and training, participants will explore practical strategies such as coaching students in constructive feedback, preparing them for equitable and efficient hiring processes, and equipping them to facilitate accurate and consistent peer training. This structure creates space for shared learning and practical takeaways that directly strengthen the student employment experience within campus recreation. The idea for this program grew from conversations among staff and the NIRSA Student Staff Development Committee about the challenges of preparing student leaders to supervise effectively, with the goal of creating a collaborative forum for exchanging approaches. The session will be hosted by the NIRSA Student Staff Development Committee and is intended for professionals invested in developing student leaders as both supervisors and future professionals.
